One of the least expensive options for looking after your teeth is a regular check-up by your dentist. Regular visits to your dentist, at any age, are the best method for ensuring that your teeth and gums are kept clean and healthy.

While checkups can vary, your dentist will most likely examine your teeth and gums for any visible problems. He or she may also take x-rays to make sure there aren't any hidden problems. (Pregnant women will only be x-rayed under emergency conditions.) Your dentist or hygienist may also professionally clean your teeth to remove hardened plaque (tartar) from above and below the gum line, as well as polish them (also called a prophylaxis) to remove hardened plaque and stains from the tooth surface.

Often, a visit to the dentist only happens once a problem exists. As your dentist can identify small problems before they become larger problems, a regular check-up will alleviate the pain and anxiety caused by the dental chair.

You should plan on seeing your First Bite dentist and hygienist twice a year for checkups. And don't forget: your dentist and hygienist can also provide expert instruction on brushing and flossing.
